L009 Akiyama Jade Mountain Ornament ( Liao / Jin Dynasty, AD916-1234)                                       Height: 6.09cm,Width: 4.09cm,Thick: 2.37cm

Akiyama Jade is based on the Khitan Jurchen autumn bowl. Green jade, hollow three-dimensional deep round carving.
In the mountain forest, two Zhiguan deer are carved on both sides. The carving method is multi-layered back and forth, with a strong three-dimensional sense. It is completely different from the silhouette-type carving in Tang and Tang dynasties. You can see the new development of jade carving art.
From the research of these Liao, Jin and Jade articles, it can be seen that in the long-term contacts with the Han people, Khitan and Jurchen have continuously accepted the advanced Han culture and gradually integrated.

The Liao Dynasty was the Khitan ethnic power in the Liaoshui basin in the northeast, and the Jin was a power established by the Jurchen tribe's Yanbian united with the Khitan and Han nationalities. Under the influence of the Northern Song Dynasty, it established a full etiquette, public service and other systems. It is basically similar to the jade used by the inner court of the Northern Song Dynasty. Its jade material was advanced from Huihu or obtained from Xixia.
The so-called "Autumn Mountain Jade" is the scene of the Liao and Jin royal family when they were hunting in the autumn. Most of them carved bears and deer. The Zhiguan deer stood leisurely for food. The roe looked back, and the stag followed the neck, full of wild forest.

If Sui and Tang jade articles are exaggerated and lively, then Song, Liao, and Jin jade articles focus on expressing the inner world of the object, and they can accurately carry out detailed sculpting, exquisite refinement, and true and natural. Therefore, it is more appropriate to summarize the characteristics of jade articles in this period by "both form and spirit".

This is beyond the reach of later jadeware. And this "Akiyama Jade Yamagata Ornament" is revealing it! Very precious!
