Brief introduction of Dr. Zhang Wenji

Dr. Zhang Wenji  was born in Guangzhou in 1942 and moved to Macau in early 1964. He grew up in the jewelry industry since he was a child. Because his uncle "Mr. Zhang Wei-ji" was the chairman of the previous “Gold Industry Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong and Guangzhou”  in the 1940s and 1950s., he know many celebrities from all over the world (including the Royal descendants) and see all kinds of rare things. He held a senior position in a jewellery group in Macau in the 1960s. In the 1980s, he opened a jewellery art and cultural relic store in Hong Kong with his friends. At the same time, he was engaged in research, forensics, collection and writing. His rule is: Theory must Combine with practice.

The above books have become the first systematic and complete scientific works in Asian history. Therefore, in 1981, Dr. Zhang was awarded the title of “Dr. Gemology” by “ The International University ” of Belgium. Soon after, he became the host of the “Gemological Center of Asia” and continued to conduct academic exchanges with international experts and scholars, including: Na zhi-liang, the ancient jade director of the National Palace Museum in Taipei, and Lu Ji-min, head of the expert group of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Cultural Relics. Sun Xue-hai, Cultural Relics Appraisal Consultant, Xie Qi-huang, director of the Chinese National Museum, and Lu Ren-kuan, the world-renowned gemological authority, often analyze ancient objects and exchange ideas. Some of them are still his close friends today.

From the 1960s to the present, Dr. Zhang have been continuously researching, identifying and collecting valuable Chinese historical relics and works of art. In the same period, he has participated in seminars, lectures, etc. in many regions and domestic and foreign academic circles and collectors. Constantly exploring, augmenting and seeing, he was honored to be recognized by many parties. In the past 40 years, he has invited and received by China's top leaders for many times, and from time to time for the well-known people at home and abroad to Help them identify the collection.

Dr. Zhang’s seventh book, "The Essence of Chinese Ancient Jade", has been fully prepared for more than 30 years. The preface of this book was written by Mr. Xie Qi-huang, the authority of the Chinese cultural relics and the director of the Chinese National Museum. The preface is written in the year of 2OO3. It is extremely difficult to prove the content, and it is necessary to constantly increase and change a little. Some scholars have come up with the perfection of writing and constantly study hard. As a result, the book does not come out and this is not good. Therefore, his late good friend Na Zhi-liang (formerly the former director of the National Palace Museum in Taipei) said in the end of the preface of his book  Chinese Ancient Jade Emoticons: “ I go abroad almost every year, looking for unearthed materials, and taking notes to bring these new materials back. However, the more you know, the harder it is to write, and it has been delayed for many years. Now that I am over eighty years old, if I were not brave enough to complete this work, I am afraid I will be disappointed forever."  Dr. Zhang’s situation is similar to him, so he decided to publish again, “can't drag, even if it is very difficult to do!”

Today, Dr. Zhang once again publish a large-scale "The Essence of Chinese Ancient Jade". The new book analyzes the style and the characteristics of jade products of each dynasty during the thousands of years in China, as well as the methods and experiences of identifying ancient jade. In addition, the book also displays valuable and special art pieces of jade; it has been chosen from the Neolithic Age to the Qing Dynasty. Each dynasty has twenty or thirty contemporary typical, representative, or special jade of arts. Other products that are nothing to do, can represent their unique style!

According to Dr. Zhang Wenji: Among the treasures that have been preserved for thousands of years in the world, Chinese jade articles have become a single banner. It is a treasure of ancient Chinese culture and art, and it is also a rare legacy of world history and culture! In the Western "Gemology", there are no subjects in the nearly 200 disciplines (Jade). They even studied a few minerals that were rare and of no value, but they did not understand (Jade), especially Chinese ancient jade. Therefore, if the future (Jade) can formally become one of the specialized disciplines of "Gemology" and has formal textbooks and reference books, it will be able to promote the glorious tradition of the Chinese nation for more than 5,000 years, and make Chinese ancient jade famous in the world! If he can contribute to it, it is his lifelong wish!
